New Technologies

The BMBF funds research and development in the field of future-oriented new technologies in order to lay the foundations for Germany's future.

The development of humankind is characterized by technological progress. This not only includes the development from the first tools to industrialized society but also the path from the first devices for agriculture to modern methods of food production.

Technical developments change society. The invention of the printing press was one of the vital conditions for spreading education beyond a very small social class. New technologies in medicine are increasing life expectancy and are thereby enabling new forms of individual life planning for the first time.

Technological developments have been the basis for our prosperity ever since Germany became one of the most important industrialized nations worldwide.

The BMBF is funding research and development in the field of future-oriented new technologies in order to lay the foundations for Germany's future.

Framework Programme - Research for Civil Security

Security is the foundation of freedom and an important factor for our prosperity in Germany. Through modern progress, however, challenges to security are subject to constant change. Supply grids and networks are the lifelines of our society, and despite the robust technology utilized, they can break down at the smallest disturbance. Natural disasters are becoming increasingly dangerous due to climate change. So too can large events present challenges to safety. What can research do to minimize the impact of catastrophes? How can citizens be better protected against terrorist attacks? Security research within the Federal Government's High-Tech Strategy is addressing these questions.

The Information Society - Setting the Course for the Future

The development of information and communication technologies (ICT) is a driver for major innovations in production and services. Technological development is vital if we are to remain internationally competitive. Support for this emerging sector has made our country competitive again and has created many new jobs. As usual, the funding priorities are set by the EU's 7th Research Framework Programme and the BMBF's ICT 2020 programme.

    Microsystems Technology

Microsystems Technology (MST) is used everywhere - by suppliers of car parts, in medical technology and in the information and communication sectors. The sector employs approximately 766,000 people in Germany and had a turnover of more than 82 billion euros in 2009. The upward trend will continue - with growth rates of up to 10 percent per year. Funding for this key technology is thus an important part of the Federal Government's High-Tech Strategy. The BMBF plans to set aside approximately 80 million euros for microsystems technology in 2010 alone under the funding programme "Information and Communication Technologies (ICT 2020)".

Research in photonics - Shaping the future with light

A branch of high technology has long since developed around the medium of light and German businesses are among the world market leaders in various areas of photonics, including laser technology, lighting, or microscopy and imaging. The photonics industry provides jobs for more than 120,000 people. The research funding provided in the last ten years has played a pivotal role in the industry's success. The BMBF funding programme "Photonics Research Germany: Light with a Future" illustrates the Federal Government's strategy to maintain and build upon Germany's strong market position in the next ten years.

Production Research: Solutions Made in Germany for Production and Close-to-Production Services

Not to go forward is to go backward, in particular in the area of production. The manufacturing industry as the mainstay of German industry must therefore constantly meet new challenges in order to maintain Germany's top position on the world market. Research on new production technologies and systems creates the conditions for the future of production in Germany and the technical edge in terms of greater individuality of customer service, the conservation of resources, and reliability.

Nanotechnology - A Future Technology with Vision

Nanotechnology is increasingly considered to be the future technology. Instead of "ever higher, ever wider" its motto is "ever smaller, ever faster". Nanotechnology provides access to the world of the smallest things. One nanometre is a millionth part of a millimetre. The diameter of a human hair is fifty thousand times bigger. The possible applications of this technology are immense. Future progress in nanotechnology will also determine the further development of future-oriented branches. The Federal Ministry of Research has presented a new overall strategy for this area.

Materials Innovation - an Investment for the Future

Materials are the driving force for innovative product developments in industry. They define the technological performance of industrial societies and improve the competitiveness of companies, reduce the ecological impact through an efficient use of ressources, and play an important role in medical care. Materials technologies, together with relevant areas in chemistry, nano technology, and process engineering, are of particular relevance for industry and society.
