The competition is open to young people of school age in all school years and types of schools, as well as trainees and persons performing military or civilian service.
Participants submit their compositions on the basis of annual calls in three different categories
(chamber ensemble, piano solo, free style ranging from solo to orchestral compositions). The line up for the chamber ensemble category is different every year. The precondition is that entrants must have composed the piece themselves and it must not have already been submitted to a previous German National Composition Competition.
Details can be found in the call for compositions.
The compositions submitted are evaluated by a jury according to the criteria of originality, creativity and treatment of the instruments, also taking into account the age of the entrant.
Thirty prize winners are selected from among the entrants.
These young composers receive an invitation to a one-week composition workshop at Weikersheim Castle. Here they are given the opportunity to discuss their compositions among themselves and in dialogue with professional composers and musicians. A professional ensemble rehearses and performs the compositions of the prize winners in the category chamber ensembles. A CD is produced of the final concert.
