Theatre Meeting of German-Speaking Drama Students and the Competition to promote Young Actors

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research has been funding the Competition to Promote Young Actors since 1990 in cooperation with the Länder. Drama students from 17 drama colleges united in the Standing Conference of German Drama Colleges in Germany (12), Austria (3) and Switzerland (2) are invited to the annual Theatre Meeting of German-Speaking Drama Students. They each present one production in the competition. Students conduct discussions in their own forums. The programme is rounded off by further events and meetings with teachers and artists.

What are the objectives of the competition?

The competition offers young drama students in Germany, Austria and Switzerland the opportunity to make their mark, to learn from one another and to conduct discussions on the future of the theatre.
It helps the students to cope with critics and strengthens their own powers of judgement as well as providing an insight into the various training methods at the drama colleges.
Details of the competition can be found in the guidelines at www.theatertreffen.com.

Who can participate?

The competition addresses students in the higher semesters at drama colleges which are members of the Standing Conference of Drama Colleges (SKS). These institutions nominate a student production for the competition following an internal selection procedure.

Up to 15 drama students per college may be invited to take part in the week-long meeting. Guests are also welcome. However, these must pay their own expenses.

The meeting is held in a different place every year and is hosted by one of the drama colleges.

What tasks are set?

Entries may involve ensemble or solo productions and must not last more than 60 minutes. Each entry is discussed in a student forum.
In addition, further contributions by students may be shown within the framework of an off-programme.

How is the contest conducted?

The one-hour productions are shown during the week-long meeting. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research appoints an independent jury in agreement with the Länder.

What awards are granted?

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research awards prize money totalling 20,000 euros for the "Drama Student Prizes of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research". Prizes may be awarded for ensemble, individual scene and solo performances. The jury decides on the number of prizes and the level of the respective prize money awarded.

Further prizes are provided by other donors.

A documentation is published every year with details of the productions, critical reviews, details of participants, jury members and other information on the meeting.
