The contest is open to all young people attending a secondary school within the German education system in the current school year who are no older than 17 years of age in the January of the EUSO, i.e. born in 1992 or later.
Participants must solve problems which are selected and posed by an Examination Committee of the International Biology, Chemistry and Physics Olympiads. These consist of theoretical and practical problems relating to all fields of school biology, chemistry and physics. The level of difficulty is higher than general school level. The fourth round deals solely with practical problems which encourage the team competencies of the individual participants.
EUSO candidates can qualify to take part in the Biology, Chemistry or Physics Olympiads (link). They must reach the third round of these Olympiads at least, but must not necessarily be among the best candidates. They then take part in the 4th round of the EUSO in Potsdam in the spring of the EUSO, where the six best candidates are selected.
Medals, certificates and book prizes are awarded.
The six best candidates from the fourth round take part in the European Science Olympiad as two German teams with three members each. The Olympiad is hosted by a different country of the European Union every year.
