Competition for Democratic Citizenship

The BMBF has been funding the Competition for Democratic Citizenship since 1989. It is open to all general schools in Germany. The motto of the competition is "Said and Done!". The competition seeks examples of democracy both inside and outside of schools. School students are called upon to submit topics and projects which strengthen independent democratic action.

The Competition for Democratic Citizenship sets out to strengthen democratic attitudes and democratic culture in everyday school and youth-work settings. It recognizes exceptional services to democracy and the common good, and promotes "democratic citizenship" on the part of school students as well as teachers.

Who can participate in the competition?

The competition is open to individual school students, groups of school students, or school students together with teachers at all types of schools and in all years, as well as in conjunction with parents or youth workers.

How is the competition conducted?

The deadline for the submission of project documentation is 30 November each year. Projects should be submitted in the form of a brief but concise written report, if possible together with sound and film recordings, photos and other project results. A jury selects approximately 50 projects from the entries submitted.

What awards do participants receive and what are the next steps?

The selected projects can take part in the "Lernstatt Demokratie" (democracy workplace). There, school students can present their results, and work on topics and forms of democratic citizenship. The "Lernstatt Demokratie" takes place in a different Land every year in cooperation with schools and educational establishments.
