German-Israeli Cooperation BIO-DISC

Germany and Israel have collaborated on biotechnology since 1976, and in 2004 both countries agreed to provide joint bilateral funding to small and medium-sized enterprises after the conclusion of the very successful DISNAT measure. Providing funding for strategic partnerships between biotechnology companies and foreign enterprises makes an important contribution to maintaining and expanding the international competitive edge of these companies, which are by and large young companies.

The German-Israeli Cooperation in Biotechnology (BIO-DISC) was launched in 2004 to provide funding to projects in applied research in biotechnology. Its objective is to open up new possibilities of cooperation to the mutual benefit of biotechnology enterprises in the two countries. BIO-DISC aims to transfer the biotechnology know-how (new processes, products and services) developed in Germany and in Israel more rapidly into industrial application. The German side is providing funding of about 3 million euros for the selection rounds, which occur at intervals of 1-2 years.

Funding is generally provided for two kinds of projects:

  1. Collaboration with enterprises ("2+2 projects")

Funding for collaborative projects that have at least one industrial partner in each country. Academic partners are eligible to join. The purpose of funding is to support German commercial enterprises in establishing cooperation in R&D with enterprises in Israel. The BMBF provides funding to German project partners. The Israeli enterprises receive funding from the MOITAL.
  2. FEASIBILITY STUDIES (NO INVOLVEMENT OF ENTERPRISES)

Funding is provided for feasibility studies at academic institutions in preparation of industrial R&D projects. The BMBF provides funding to both the German and the Israeli project partners. The Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) is the partner for feasibility studies on the Israeli side.

Six joint rounds of selection have taken place up to now. The projects selected in the sixth round started in 2011. The seventh round of selection is currently in progress (submission deadline was 2 May 2012).
