Health care research

The ambition to provide everyone with an optimal and safe treatment continues to be of central importance in health care. At the same time, there is growing pressure to cut costs in the health care system. It is important to balance good health care and economic considerations. The Federal Government supports the establishment of an efficient German health care research system and health economy, with a special focus on patient orientation and patient safety.

    Patient-Oriented Research

    It is a well-known fact that Germany has a good medical care system. However, failures in the system are discovered time and again - too often involving major common diseases. In the past, research focused mainly on medical care or rehabilitation research. Patient-oriented research now studies how to care for patients in their daily life. The "Patient-Oriented Research - Patient Orientation and Chronic Diseases" research priority has been funded by the BMBF, the Deutsche Rentenversicherung (German pension insurance), the associations of the statutory health insurance schemes and the Verband der privaten Krankenversicherung e.V. (association of private health insurance funds) since 2006 with support from the Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.

    Healthy Ageing

    The chances of ageing healthily have never been better. Rapid medical advances in particular mean that average life expectancy has been increasing continuously over the past 100 years and it is expected to increase even further in the future. The development of preventive medicine and the early diagnosis of numerous diseases are important for healthy ageing. This applies in particular to dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases.
