2nd International BMBF-Conference - Future Megacities in Action

The second "International BMBF-Conference on Future Megacities" will take place from 14 to 16 May 2013. The conference will be held in Hamburg, the 2011 "European Green Capital" where currently a number of highly renowned practices supporting a shift towards urban sustainability are coming to life. The main objective of the conference is to organize a forum on innovative solutions for sustainable urban development particularly for emerging megacities in developing and newly industrializing countries.

Cities, particularly emerging megacities in developing and newly industrializing countries, play a significant role in climate change. They are both massive contributors of greenhouse gases as well as sensitive victims to its consequences. Therefore, they are taking action for climate change mitigation and adaptation as well as energy and resource efficiency.

The international conference Future Megacities in Action will highlight good practice examples of energy and climate efficient urbanization from Asia, Africa and America, set against the European background. It will feature the results of the research programme "Future Megacities" funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research since 2005: technical, social and economic solutions developed by participating bilateral and trans-disciplinary research teams for and with cities. It will also present innovative approaches taken in other cities that stand out in their efforts towards achieving greater sustainability.

Spotlights on urban challenges and needs, workshops and a market place will provide insights into model solutions, products and tangible results. What contributions do science and research make to urban development? How to implement good practice? How can innovation be brought to a larger scale? How can such projects be financed? Panels with international experts will tackle these questions. Short films and excursions to model projects in Hamburg will complete the programme.

The conference aims to address an audience made up of representatives from all sectors of urban development. It will offer ample opportunities to meet other actors in the field and exchange ideas with international practitioners, researchers and dedicated urbanists from many disciplines.

Join our conference with a diverse programme in Hamburg's historic Fish Auction Hall and get up-to-date on innovative solutions for energy and climate efficient urbanization.
