Dr. med. Helge Braun

Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Education and Research

Helge Braun has been a Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Education and Research since October 2009. As a Member of the German Bundestag and a member of the Federal Government, he supports the Minister in fulfilling her governmental duties, in particular regarding appearances and other appointments in the parliamentary domain. His priority topics at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research are its budget, vocational education and training, international cooperation, research in the life sciences and the promotion of young scientists.

There, he has been a member of the Committee on Education, Research and Technology Assessment and of the Committee on the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety since 2009 and before that from 2002 to 2005. He was vice-chairman of the Hesse group of Bundestag members in the CDU/CSU parliamentary group and spokesman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Parliamentary Advisory Council on Sustainable Development from 2003 to 2005.

Helge Braun has been chairman of the Mittelhessen district association of the CDU since 2007 and chairman of the Giessen county association of the CDU since 2004. He has been involved in politics since his youth: from 1989 to 2007, he was a member, and for many years local chairman, of the Junge Union (the youth section of the CDU and CSU) at municipal and district level as well as a member of the CDU. He is a passionate participant in the affairs of his home town of Giessen: from 1997 to 2009, he was a member of Giessen town council and from 2006 to 2009 a member of Giessen county council where he was also chairman of the CDU group.

Helge Braun studied medicine at Justus Liebig University Giessen from 1994 to 2001. He then worked at the Clinic for Anaesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Management in Giessen until 2009. Besides his work as an anaesthetist, he worked as a research associate in the area of health care. Helge Braun was awarded his Doctorate in Medicine in 2007. He obtained his Abitur at Liebig School in Giessen in 1992 before going on to perform his military service with the Federal Armed Forces in Koblenz.

Helge Braun was born in Giessen on 18 October 1972. He is married.
