Year of Information Technology

The seventh year of science 2006 was dedicated to computer science. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research, together with the initiative "Wissenschaft im Dialog" and numerous other partners utilised the Year of Information Technology to exhibit the relevance of this technical discipline and provide new insights for the general public. "Informatics Year" wanted to make people look forward to the future and acquaint them with an area of science that is advancing rapidly.

Be it health, mobilty, security, sports, housekeeping or communication and culture - all aspects of our life are dependent on products resulting from computer science.

The Year of Information Technology  aims at sharpening the awareness for the numerous applications and opportunities provided by computer science and to highlight the significance of computer science as a factor for the economic development Germanys. A special intention is to stimulate the fascination with this quite young science and to inform young people about the many career opportunities in this field.

The Year of Information Technology 2006 ended in December with a ceremony in Berlin.

RoboCup 2006

AIBOs play soccerOne highlight of Informatics Year coincides with the Football World Cup: the tenth RoboCup World Championships - the biggest-ever robotics tournament. The tenth robot football world championships on 14th to 20th June 2006 in Bremen, took place to coincide with the Football World Cup and the finals of the Germany-wide RoboCupJunior initiative - an initiative organised by Bremen University, the TZI and the Bremen Fair Centre. The RoboCup is an international initiative for promoting research in the field of artificial intelligence and autonomous mobile robots. It is the largest and most important robotics event in the world. As a worldwide, project-based education initiative, RoboCupJunior is aimed in particular at young people, who compete against the best teams from all over the world in the disciplines of football, dance und rescue.

 

 

Science Summer 2006

Science Summer 2006, which is organised by the Science in Dialogue initiative, will this year take place in Munich, 15th to 21th July 2006. The Since Summer is dedicated to informatics and its many applications in science and everyday life. Among other things, a tent exhibition shows how computer games have developed. The programme includes talks for adults and school students, a science film festival, a pupils' parliament, as well as workshops and experiments.

The opening of the Science Summer will be marked by the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF) on 15th to 19th July 2006 in Munich. The pan-European Euroscience Open Forum will bring together top European researchers and science communicators. The outstanding lecture programme will be complemented by scientific exhibits and presentations by European research institutions. ESOF is being coordinated and organised by Science in Dialogue.
