Analyses and Statistics of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research

Data and facts form the basis for rational decision-making. Comparisons with other countries reveal where we stand. The analysis of processes of innovation enables us to learn from individual successes. In the field of analyses and statistics, the BMBF collects and analyzes facts in order to be able to improve education and research in Germany. As an innovation to BMBF analyses, the internationally staffed independent Expert Commission Research and Innovation has taken up work. The commission will periodically examine the state of research and innovation in Germany.

The BMBF regulraly reports on the state of the Germany resaerch and innovation system. Every four years, the Report of the Federal Government on Research is published as a broad portray of research in Germany and its development. Additionally, the BMBF commissions studies to evaluate the different aspects of Germany's technological performance and to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the German innovation system. Once every year, the most important results are compiled in a report on Germany's technological performance. Both of these reports follow resolutions of the German Parliament.

In 2006 the German Parliament concluded a rearrangement of the reports on research and innovation through the appointment of an independent Expert Group on Research and Innovation. This Expert Group will advise the Federal Government on research, innovation and technology policy and will present a report on research, innovation and the technological performance in Germany every two years from 2008 on. The Federal Government itself will present to the German Parliament a  "Report of the Federal Government on Research and Innovation" every two years to compile a comprehensive status report on research, innovation and technology.

The Expert Commission Research and Innovation was summoned an March 1st 2007 to its constitutive meeting. On the commission are six internationally renowned scientists and experts. Chairman is Prof. Dietmar Harhoff, his deputy is Prof. Hariolf Grupp. The six members are:
