Educational Research
Sound empirical educational research is necessary for the further development of the education system. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research has therefore launched a framework programme to fund empirical educational research in late 2007.
Educational Research Conference 2020 / Challenges and Prospects
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is holding a conference in Berlin on 29 and 30 March 2012 to provide an opportunity to discuss the challenges and prospects of its framework programme Educational Research 2020 from the perspective of science, politics, and practice.
Demographic change is a major challenge for all players in the field of education. The two-day conference will provide a forum for scientists and representatives of education policy and practice to gain insight into the results of educational research and discuss approaches to addressing these challenges. Not only will the results of scientific research be presented, but educational practitioners will also have an opportunity to draw attention to specific problems and to formulate research requirements.

The framework programme to promote empirical educational research sets out to develop the research environment by means of consistent structural funding and to thus contribute to strengthening and enhancing Germany's international position in education and research. At the same time, efficient educational research methods will improve the scientific basis for an evidence-based and output-oriented governance of the education system.
This requires great commitment and perseverance on the part of research funding. Close cooperation between the Federal Government and the Länder will be particularly important in developing the research landscape and implementing the results. The programme was therefore not only developed in close interaction with the Länder and the science community; the Federal Government and the Länder are also cooperating closely in implementing the framework programme.
The framework programme contains measures for the structural strengthening of research and for the funding of research in selected thematic priorities.
Measures to enhance the structure of empirical educational research cover
- quality development and assurance of BMBF-funded educational research
- the promotion of young scientists
- the promotion of international exchanges
- the improvement of the information infrastructure
- the distribution of the results of educational research
The thematic research priorities in selected fields will provide scientists with long-term planning certainty so that internationally competitive and interdisciplinary competence centres can develop.

The BMBF has established a
portal which documents BMBF research funding in the area of educational research as well as the results of projects funded in the context of this framework programme. The portal aims to address the scientific community and members of the general public interested in education. The development of the portal is supported by the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF).
