Better opportunities for everyone

In today's knowledge society, education, training and lifelong learning are the most important prerequisites for an individual's future opportunities in life and employment, as well as for social participation and social integration. Our international competitiveness depends on the quality of our institutions of higher education. Improved structures in continuing education will make Germany fit for the challenges of the future. These are the Federal Government's priorities in order to open up educational opportunities for everyone. (URL: )

Ensuring Equal Opportunities by Means of BAföG

How can I finance my study course? An answer to this question is given by the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG). The 22. BAföG Amendment allows further improvements: BAföG rates are raised, the monthly limits on additional earnings are extended to 400 Euros. Students with children are supported with a special bonus. The first parts of the amendment became effective at the beginning of 2008. BAföG support is therefore an important element in encouraging more young people to take up studies and undergo qualified training. more (URL: http://www.bmbf.de/en/892.php)

JOBSTARTER: Funding programme for more traineeships

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is supporting the development of a training structure through its JOBSTARTER programme. This programme is already supplying funding for 200 innovative projects in vocational training. A further 43 projects are due to be launched in 2009. All these projects are helping to create additional traineeships in the regions and are offering various measures to support companies which either have no previous experience with training or which have grown weary of providing training. They are making an important contribution to structural development, for example by establishing cross-border training cooperation or launching collaborative training schemes. An additional focus is on projects which test new opportunities under the Vocational Training Act (BBiG).  more (URL: http://www.bmbf.de/en/2313.php)

    Training Campaign

The Federal Government's Training Campaign pursues the objective of improving the training place situation in the long term; at the same time, it is a central element for the implementation of the Federal Government's supportive activities agreed in the "National Pact for Training and Young Skilled Staff in Germany". Different measures are to support industry in creating training places. This applies, in particular, to regions with a comparatively poor ratio between demand for and supply of training places. At the same time, more training places are to be created in future-oriented branches and in the area of new technologies. more (URL: http://www.bmbf.de/en/2295.php)

International Marketing for Initial and Continuing Vocational Training

"Training Made in Germany" stands for the internationally recognized quality of the German initial and continuing vocational training system. Continuing vocational training is increasingly becoming an international service product. The BMBF therefore supports marketing for "Training Made in Germany" with the establishment of the iMOVE office. The objective of iMOVE is to contribute to preparing German programmes of continuing vocational training for the international competition by means of special measures, and to position them increasingly on the international market of continuing training. more (URL: http://www.bmbf.de/en/887.php)

    The Bologna Process

The Bologna Process was launched in 1999. It has contributed to the successful modernization of the German institutions of higher education. Germany and its European neighbours have set themselves the task of creating a European Higher Education Area by 2010 in the order to succeed in the international competition for the best brains. In Germany, we have taken advantage of the biggest higher education reform for decades to improve the quality of study courses, to enhance employability and to reduce the length of studies. more (URL: http://www.bmbf.de/en/3336.php)

Germany's educational system at a glance

Responsibility for the German education system is determined by the federal structure of the state. Under the Basic Law (Grundgesetz) the exercise of governmental powers and the fulfilment of governmental responsibility is incumbent upon the individual Länder as far as the Basic Law does not allow for any other arrangement. With its different school types and the vocational trainig system, the German education system is somewhat distinct from others. The following overview serves as an introduction and orientation. more (URL: http://www.bmbf.de/en/4761.php)
