Since 2007, the BMBF has offered the funding initiative "KMU-innovativ" for the innovative SMEs target group. Proposals can be submitted until the semi-annual deadlines of 15 April and 15 October. The scheme currently focuses on eight fields of technology, including biotechnology. As of 15 October 2011, KMU-innovativ was expanded to include medical technology.
With "KMU-innovativ," the BMBF is pursuing the goal of strengthening the innovation potential of small and medium-sized enterprises in cutting-edge research while making research funding more attractive, particularly for first-time applicants. For this reason, the BMBF has simplified the application and approval process and expanded advisory services.
In addition to national R&D projects, the BMBF also funds transnational cooperation in biotechnology, for example, "Eurotrans-Bio" through ERA-Net or the German-Israeli initiative BIO-DISC.
