Center for the Transformation of Chemistry (CTC) : Date: , Theme: Wissen schafft Perspektiven für die Region!

The CTC is one of the two winners of the ideas competition "Science Creating Prospects for the Region!”. The new large-scale research centre will be built in the central German coal-mining region and aims to transform the chemical industry into a circular economy.

Center for the Transformation of Chemistry

The German Federal Government and the Länder Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt are funding a new large-scale research centre in the central German coalfield: the Center for the Transformation of Chemistry.

Currently, most of the raw materials for chemical production are derived from crude oil and the products are disposed of after use. The goal of the Center for the Transformation of Chemistry (CTC) is to create a circular economy in the chemical industry that is based on renewable raw materials or recycled materials and whose products can be reused. Energy-saving and resource-efficient production processes will play a key role in this. A wide range of raw material sources will be explored for a variety of products and industries (e.g. health, energy, fertilizers, consumer goods). A transdisciplinary approach involving collaboration with partners from science, industry and society will be used in order to establish such a sustainable chemical industry.

Basic research and applied research under one roof

The new large-scale research centre aims to bundle various approaches. Following the example of the technology transfer model at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), groundbreaking basic research, applied research and cooperation with industry are to come together under one roof. The aim is to create an internationally prominent beacon of cutting-edge research that will attract outstanding scientists and skilled workers to the region.

Large-scale research centre CTC will create new jobs

The economic potential of sustainable chemistry is very high. The region surrounding the central German coalfield has a long history of chemical industry and the centre therefore fits in very well in its economic environment. The centre will utilize a range of approaches to achieve technology transfer, including spin-off companies, new settlements in the region, licencing of intellectual property and joint research projects with industry partners. The goal is to create and secure new jobs and apprenticeships in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, Germany and beyond.
