Christian Luft has been State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) since October 2018. Prior to this, he was Director-General for “Social, Health, Labour Market, Infrastructure and Societal Policy” at the Federal Chancellery, where he was also responsible for education and research.

Christian Luft has many years of experience in Federal and state administration. From January 2010 to December 2013, he headed the “Social, Health and Labour Market Policy” Directorate at the Federal Chancellery and went on to become Head of Directorate-General “Social Insurance; Old-Age Security, Social Assistance” at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.

Before transferring to Berlin, Mr Luft worked at the Baden-Württemberg State Ministry of Social Affairs and Integration from May 2007 to January 2010. He served as Head of Division “Care and Senior Services, Long-term Care Insurance” and Deputy Director-General for “Social Insurance”.

Christian Luft had a posting at the Federal Chancellery earlier in his career– from September 2006 to May 2007 – as Head of Division “Health”. Prior to that, he was Head of Division and Deputy Director-General for “Labour and Social Insurance” at the Baden-Württemberg State Ministry of Social Affairs, where he had started his career in March 1991 as a press desk officer. He later served as personal assistant and then head of office of the then Minister Friedhelm Repnik.

Christian Luft studied administrative sciences at the University of Konstanz from 1983 to 1988. He subsequently completed practical training for senior service in public administration and attended the Führungsakademie (Management Academy) of Baden-Württemberg.

Christian Luft was born on 17 February 1962 in Rastatt, Baden-Württemberg.
