Dr Michael Meister was appointed Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Education and Research in March 2018. He assists the Minister with her governmental duties, particularly as her deputy in Parliament. Michael Meister can look back on long years of experience as Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Finance from December 2013 to March 2018.

Michael Meister has been a Member of the German Bundestag since 1994. He was Deputy Chairman of the Commission of Inquiry on “The Future of the Media in the Economy and Society – Germany’s Road into the Information Society”. From 2002 to 2004, he was Chairman of the Finance Working Group of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group in the Bundestag. He was subsequently appointed Deputy Chairman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group in the Bundestag and held this position until December 2013. He has been a Member of the National Executive Committee of the CDU since 2010.

Michael Meister’s professional development means that he is most familiar with Germany’s science and research landscape: After taking his school-leaving examination (Abitur) at the Geschwister Scholl School in Bensheim, he studied Mathematics and Informatics at Darmstadt University of Technology (TU Darmstadt) from 1980 to 1985. Upon gaining his diploma, he worked for three years as a research assistant in the Department of Mathematics at TU Darmstadt, where he was awarded a doctorate in 1988. He worked as a flight dynamics expert at the operations centre of the European Space Agency in Darmstadt from 1990 to 1995.

Michael Meister was born in Lorsch on 9 June 1961. He grew up in Bensheim in Hesse. He is married and has two sons.
