German-Tunisian Cooperation

German-Tunisian cooperation in education and research has intensified since the political upheaval in 2011. Both countries committed to strengthening education and research cooperation in their 2014 policy statements.

The priorities of scientific and technological cooperation include the areas of renewable energy, water management, environment and bioeconomy. The first German-Tunisian call for proposals for jointly financed research projects was published in 2012. Funding is provided for projects which address issues of solar desalination, solar-powered cooling systems, salt stress tolerance of crops, water resources management and the Internet of Things. Furthermore, Germany encourages vocational training exports, that is, efforts by German companies which offer training and continuing training in Tunisia

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which operates an office in Tunis, has been providing an increasing number of programmes to support cooperation between German and Tunisian institutions of higher education since 2011. The DAAD information centre in Tunis has been advising Tunisian students and institutions wishing to cooperate with German partners since 2012.
